Beachgoers Find Giant Turtle Wedged Between Rocks And Realize She’s Alive
“[S]he was so heavy …”Published on Oct 16, 2026 at PMWhen Isabella Santos and her friends headed to the beach the other day, they hoped for a relaxing afternoon in the sun.
Instead, soon after arriving, they found themselves racing to save a giant animal stranded just offshore.Isabella SantosIt all started when Santos and her friends climbed to a secluded part of the beach at around 2 p.m., eager to get away from the crowd.
They were having fun walking along the shore, chasing footprints in the sand, when Santos suddenly spotted a large sea turtle wedged in a nearby rock structure.Without skipping a beat, Santos ran to the turtle to investigate, and what she found shocked her.“I found her trapped between the rocks,” Santos told The Dodo. “The turtle was dying because she’d been out of the water for so long.”Isabella SantosIt seemed as though the turtle had been swept onto the shore during high tide and landed sideways in the rock structure, unable to free herself once the water receded.
Santos had no idea how long the turtle had been out there, but she could see that the resilient girl was still breathing.Isabella SantosSantos was determined to help the animal, but there was one problem: the full-grown sea turtle was very heavy.
Weighing at least a few hundred pounds, it would be impossible for Santos to move the turtle on her own.
Thankfully, her friends jumped in to help.
But it wasn’t an easy feat, even for a group of determined individuals.“There were four of us, and it took us 15 minutes to move her because she was so heavy,” Santos said. “The hardest part was moving her very carefully so as not to hurt her.”Isabella SantosAfter 15 tense minutes, the group finally freed the turtle from the rocks and positioned her on the sand, facing the water.
She seemed groggy and sluggish, so the friends pulled her to the shore. As they got closer to the ocean, the oncoming waves began lapping over the sea turtle.
And with each drink of water, she started to come alive.Isabella SantosIt wasn’t long before the turtle was completely submerged in the water, held up by her four rescuers who wanted to ensure she could swim before letting go.
But as they were monitoring her, a big wave came in and swept her away.
And she proved once and for all that she was able to swim, happily returning to her natural habitat as if nothing had happened. You can watch footage of the rescue here:Santos and her friends never expected to save a life when they headed to the beach.
But watching the turtle swim away just 20 minutes after finding her in a life-threatening situation made the unconventional beach trip even more worthwhile.“We felt relief,” Santos said.
