Puppy Born With Skull Defect And Blonde Mohawk Has No Idea She’s Any Different

“[It’s] one of Twilight’s superpowers …”Published on May 1, 2026 at PMWhile watching The Puppy Bowl last November, one of the fluffy players suddenly caught Mandy Cotta’s attention.

Twilight Sparkles, a 6-month-old adoptable pup born with a genetic skull defect, had made the game-winning touchdown that night — and Cotta was instantly smitten with her.“[S]he’s a real-life unicorn,” Cotta told The Dodo.Mandy CottaTwilight Sparkles, who goes by Twilight, had already experienced some devastating hardships in her short life by the time she was on TV.

She’d been found as a stray with her mom and dad in Texas a few months earlier, then taken to a local shelter, where she faced a grim fate.“[T]he shelter had put her on the euthanasia list as they did not have the space or capability of managing her,” Cotta said.Mandy CottaThankfully, Hearts & Bones Rescue stepped in just in time.

Founder Whitney Fang fostered Twilight, taking her from Texas to Brooklyn, New York, in hopes of finding a forever home.

Twilight felt relieved to be in foster care, where she could decompress from her traumatic past and receive care for some seizures she’d been experiencing. On the outside, Twilight looked different from most other dogs.

The tan puppy had a distinct ridge on her skull and a tuft of blonde hair growing from the center of her forehead, which transformed into a fluffy yellow mohawk as she aged.

But it wasn’t until Twilight visited a neurologist that her caregivers truly understood what was going on.“[The mohawk is] a result of a congenital skull malformation, a bone ridge that runs along her forehead,” Cotta said. “She was born with a brain anomaly: She is missing part of her corpus callosum, the part of her brain that connects the left and right sides.”Mandy CottaAside from the seizures, which were quickly managed with medication, Twilight was just as playful and adventurous as any other puppy her age.

She was soon adopted by Cotta, and she seamlessly joined her pack of four rescued siblings — Maya, Oliver, Rylie and Pipp — as if she’d always belonged.“One of Twilight’s superpowers is that she has no clue she’s different,” Cotta said. “She tackles everything with determination and positivity and never gives up.”You can watch Twilight play with her siblings here:Although Twilight sometimes struggles with coordination while climbing stairs and getting up on furniture, she is never discouraged.

Whenever she falls, she rebounds immediately with a smile on her face.“[S]he always gets up happier and stronger,” Cotta said. “She is beyond charming.

We joke that when I have to lift her in the car, she looks at me with pride like she did it all on her own.”Mandy CottaWith her first birthday coming up in May, Twilight has a lot to celebrate.

Not only did she survive life as a medically vulnerable stray, but she also became a TV sensation at the Puppy Bowl and eventually landed the family of her dreams — one that understands her and loves her unconditionally.“Twilight is extremely sweet and affectionate.

Her gentle demeanor is heart-melting,” Cotta said. “When she wants more pets, she rolls on her back and makes a ‘rawr’ face like a little dinosaur.”You can see more clips of Twilight here:Twilight may be a medical miracle, but to those who love her, she is much more than her condition.

She’s a pup who lights up every room she enters — one who will spend her remaining days being showered with the love she’s always deserved.“[W]e are filling her life with joy, as she is with us,” Cotta said. “I honestly feel lucky to be around her every day.”To keep up with Twilight Sparkles’ adventures, you can follow her family on Instagram.
